Gaming Has Gone Beyond Consoles | Gaming Blog

As technology advances, people enjoy more upgraded devices. Despite the higher prices that come with the newer models, many consumers don?t mind spending for their favorite gadgets and changing them as often as they like.

This is what?s happening with the video gaming consoles. In the past, it used to be that people relied primarily on them to play their favorite video games. In short, one had to purchase a console and even a cartridge in order to play a game. Such is the case for most of the Nintendo devices like the Atari and Gameboy.

Today, however, this is no longer the case. In fact, gaming has gone beyond the consoles.

With the advent of the internet, it is possible nowadays for players to do what they love to do online either via their computer or their mobile phone. This is convenience and savings at their best. In other words, it is really not even necessary to own a specific console in order to play a particular video game. Keep in mind that a gaming device can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars but if you?re okay with going online, then you can be sure to enjoy big savings.

The designer of Tekken, one of the most famous video games, agree that manufacturers of game consoles can no longer control the way people games. According to Harada San who is the game director and chief producer of Tekken, major console makers such as Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft can even do more good if they join forces. By this, he means coming up with a single console for the satisfaction of consumers.

Sharing with you some interesting statistics here about gaming console usage. According to the 2012 figures of grabstats.com, there are currently 190 million households in the U.S. that own the next-generation video game consoles and 80 percent have consoles connected to the internet.

Also, 65 million American households play video and computer games while the average age of a player is 35. The regular players have been engaged in their favorite activity for 13 years. You might be surprised to know that of these millions of game players, 40 percent are actually women.

NASA test spacecraft explodes in fiery crash at Cape Canaveral

An experimental lunar lander called Morpheus toppled over shortly after liftoff Thursday, whereupon it crashed into the ground and exploded in a blazing fireball.

Earlier this week NASA safely landed a robotic rover on Mars about 150 million miles away. But on Thursday here on Earth, a test model planetary lander crashed and burned at Kennedy Space Center in Florida just seconds after liftoff.

The spider-like spacecraft called Morpheus was on a test flight at Cape Canaveral when it tilted, crashed to the ground and erupted in flames. It got only a few feet up in the air, NASA said.

NASA spokeswoman Lisa Malone said it appears that the methane-and-liquid oxygen powered lander is a total loss. Nobody was hurt in the unmanned experiment and the flames were put out, she said.

NASA suspects a mechanical device that is part of its GPS navigation system, spokeswoman Brandi Dean said.

So far NASA has spent $7 million on the Morpheus program, but that includes parts for a still-to-be-built second lander.

Morpheus is a prototype for a cheap, environmentally friendly planetary lander. Thursday was the first time it had been tested untethered in a free flight. It had performed 19 flights at Johnson Space Center in Houston, where it was designed and made, and one more in Florida, but it was always tethered to a crane, Dean said.

The testing moved from Texas to Florida last week and Morpheus had a successful tether test on Friday. NASA had planned to run tests for three months. The plan was for flights over a specially created field designed to mimic the surface of the moon, with boulders, rocks, slopes and craters.

The lander was built mostly with low-cost, off-the-shelf materials. It was an attempt by NASA to use cheaper, more readily available and environmentally friendly rocket fuel. The space agency was considering it as a potential lander for places like the moon or an asteroid, figuring it would carry a human-like robot or small rover.

NASA promoted Morpheus as a "green" project because methane is more environmentally friendly than the toxic rocket fuels it uses. Methane, which is the main component of natural gas, is also cheaper and could even be made from ice on the moon or Mars, NASA figured.

Morpheus was early in the NASA experimental "test bed" process and the space agency hadn't committed to using the lander in any specific flight, NASA officials said.

NASA has parts and plans to build a second Morpheus lander, Dean said: "Hopefully, we'll be testing again before too long."

Report: Racial profiling alleged at Boston airport

(AP) ? Transportation Security Administration officers at Boston's Logan International Airport are alleging that a program intended to help flag possible terrorists based on passengers' mannerisms has led to rampant racial profiling, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/P2enzf ) reported on its website that in interviews and internal complaints it has obtained, more than 30 officers involved in the "behavior detection" program at Logan contend that the operation targets not only Middle Easterners, but also passengers who fit certain profiles ? such as Hispanics traveling to Miami, or blacks wearing baseball caps backward.

The TSA told the newspaper on Friday that it is investigating the officers' claims. At a meeting last month with the agency, officers provided written complaints, some of them anonymous, from 32 officers.

The officers said their co-workers were increasingly targeting minorities, believing the stops would lead to the discovery of drugs, outstanding arrest warrants and immigration problems, in response to pressure from managers who wanted high numbers of stops, searches and criminal referrals, The Times reported.

"The behavior detection program is no longer a behavior-based program, but it is a racial profiling program," one officer wrote in an anonymous complaint The Times obtained.

The program, which has been billed as a model for other airports across the country, is intended to allow officers to stop, search and question passengers who seem suspicious. Specially trained "assessors" observe security lines for unusual activity and speak individually with each passenger, looking for inconsistencies in the passenger's responses to questions and behavior such as avoiding eye contact, fidgeting or sweating.

Passengers considered suspicious can be taken aside for more intensive questioning.

At least one passenger has filed a formal complaint with the TSA. Kenneth Boatner, a black psychologist and educational consultant who was traveling to Atlanta on business last month, said he was detained for nearly half an hour as agents examined his belongings, including his checkbook and his patients' clinical notes.

In an interview with The Times, Boatner said he felt humiliated, and that the officers never explained why they were singling him out, but he suspected it was because of his race and attire. He was wearing sweat pants, a white T-shirt and high-top sneakers.

"I had never been subjected to anything like that," Boatner said.

The TSA said the program at Logan "in no way encourages or tolerates profiling," and that passengers cannot be subjected to behavior assessments based on their nationality, race, ethnicity or religion.

"If any of these claims prove accurate, we will take immediate and decisive action to ensure there are consequences to such activity," the agency said in a statement.

The TSA said it did not compile information on passengers' race or ethnicity and could not provide a breakdown of passengers who may have been stopped on either basis through the program.

Bo's wife blames breakdown for Briton's murder

The wife of Chinese politician Bo Xilai, whose downfall rocked the ruling elite, has admitted murdering a British businessman and blamed her actions on a mental breakdown, state media said.

Gu Kailai told her trial that she poisoned Neil Heywood after being pushed over the edge by fears that her son was in danger, Xinhua news agency reported late on Friday, more than a day after the trial wrapped up.

The former top lawyer said she would "accept and calmly face any sentence" handed down by the court in the eastern city of Hefei following the seven-hour trial, one of the most high-profile in recent Chinese history.

The verdict will be delivered at a later date, possibly days or weeks away, and while murder carries the death penalty in China, experts say Gu is likely to be spared execution and will instead face a long jail term.

Heywood's murder and allegations of a cover-up sparked the biggest political scandal in China for years and led to the downfall of Bo, who had been tipped to become one of the ruling Communist Party's top leaders.

It exposed deep divisions among China's rulers ahead of a sensitive 10-yearly handover of power later this year, and observers say the party is keen to swiftly draw a line under the controversy.

According to Xinhua, Gu told the court that "during those days last November, I suffered a mental breakdown after learning that my son was in jeopardy".

The son, Bo Guagua, and Heywood got into a dispute over a land project, Xinhua said, citing Gu's testimony.

The court heard that Heywood had demanded 13 million pounds ($20 million), and sent Bo Guagua an email threatening "you will be destroyed", according to a source who was in the room for the hearing and requested anonymity.

According to Gu's testimony, she felt that "I must fight to my death to stop the craziness of Neil Heywood".

Gu then met Heywood for a drink in a hotel room in the southwestern city of Chongqing, where her husband was at the time Communist Party boss, according to Xinhua.

She then killed him by pouring poison into his mouth when he was drunk and scattered pills across the hotel room floor to make it look as if he had overdosed.

The scandal came to light several months after the murder when Chongqing police chief and Bo's right-hand man, Wang Lijun, fled to a US consulate and alleged a cover-up.

"The case has produced great losses to the Party and the country, for which I ought to shoulder the responsibility, and I will never feel at ease," Gu told the court.

A domestic helper, Zhang Xiaojun, also admitted at the hearing to aiding Gu in the murder, said Xinhua. Four police officers also admitted on Friday to covering up Gu's involvement in the killing, a court official said.

After the scandal erupted, Bo was dismissed as boss of Chongqing and from the party's Politburo and placed under investigation. He has not been heard from since April.

Gu's carefully stage-managed trial, and that of four police officers accused of covering up the murder, were being closely watched for any hints on Bo's likely fate, although he has not been implicated in the Heywood murder.

But in several reports on the case released by Xinhua late Friday, totalling around 3,600 words, the former top politician was not mentioned once.

Xinhua said that a panel asked to assess Gu's mental state had concluded that she had been treated for depression and had taken drugs to combat the condition in the past.

However, the experts said Gu still bore "full criminal responsibility".

On Friday four senior police officials in Chongqing admitted covering up the murder to protect Gu.

Tang Yigan, an official with the Hefei Intermediate Court in eastern China, told reporters that a verdict in their case would be given at a later date.

"The defendants admitted that the charge of bending the law for selfish ends was basically correct," he said of the four, named as Guo Weiguo, Li Yang, Wang Pengfei and Wang Zhi.

The court heard how the officers covered up Gu's involvement in Heywood's death by "forging interview scripts and hiding evidence", agreeing to say he died of excessive alcohol consumption.

On Saturday, Chinese Internet censors blocked searches for the worlds "Gu Kailai", "Bo Xilai" and "Neil Heywood" although some web users did manage to comment on the case.

"It is not a judicial trial, it is a political trial and a trial for the privileged," said one web user named A'bang-kunshou.

Gu's trial drew comparisons with that of Chinese leader Mao Zedong's widow Jiang Qing, who along with the three other members of the "Gang of Four" was convicted for fomenting the tumultuous Cultural Revolution.
