NVIDIA unleashes GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, loads it with dual Kepler GPUs, charges $1k

ImageWould you look at that? NVIDIA hinted it would be coming today, and it looks like the tease is living up to the hype. The company stormed into the weekend at its Shanghai Game Festival by unleashing its latest offering, the GeForce GTX 690 -- and oh yeah, it's packing two 28nm Kepler GPUs! Trumping the recently released GTX 680 as the "worlds fastest graphics card," it's loaded with a whopping 3,072 Cuda cores. The outer frame is made from trivalent chromium-plated aluminum, while you'll find thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan for vibration reduction and added cooling. Aiding in cooling even further, the unit also sports a dual vapor chamber and center-mounted fan. It'll cost you a spendy $1,000 to pick up one of these puppies come May 3rd, and you'll likely be tempted to double up -- two can run together in SLI as an effective quad-core card. With that said, NVIDIA claims that a single 690 runs 4dB quieter and handles about twice the framerate as a duo of GTX 680s in SLI -- impressive, but we'll reserve judgement until we see it for ourselves. Check out the press release after the break if you'd like more information in the meantime (...and yes, it runs Crysis -- 2 Ultra to be exact -- at 57.8fps, according to NVIDIA).

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident. </P><P> </P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle. </P><P> </P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and has not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57419977-10391698/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-met-by-protests-in-south-korea/" target="_blank">covered Seoul with posters</a> accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances." </P><P> </P><P>The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert. </P><P> </P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking." </P><P> </P><P>Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her <i>Born this Way</i> album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented. </P><P> </P><P>Lady Gaga's <i>Born This Way</i> Ball set list: </P><P> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Highway Unicorn" <br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Government Hooker"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Born This Way"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Bloody Mary"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Bad Romance"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Fashion of His Love"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "The Queen"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Love Game"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Telephone"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Heavy Metal Lover"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Bad Kids"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Hair"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Yo&#252; and I"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Electric Chapel"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Americano"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Poker Face"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Schei&#223;e"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "The Edge of Glory"<br> </P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Marry the Night" </P><P> </P><P><i>Did you see Lady Gaga's </i>Born This Way<i> Ball? Schemer updates Android app, opens the doors to all

Schemer for Android

Schemer -- you know that invite only Google service -- has had an update to its Android application, and has also thrown open the doors to all. Until now access has been by invite only -- think Google Music, Google+, sounds pretty familiar doesn't it. Invites to the service though are no longer required, and anyone can sign up, including right from within the app itself.

The concept itself is pretty interesting, fitting it into your life could be somewhat difficult though. We'll let Google do the explaining -- they do it better than us -- so if you're not familiar, hit the source links at the bottom for more information. There's a short video to be found after the break too. It's kind of fun to fool around with, and now it's open to all it would be rude not to take a look. It's pretty well tied into Google+ too, so you'll find it pretty populated when you step inside.

So, what about the Android application update. Well, besides the ability to sign up now, we also get a refreshed UI. There's a new homepage, with suggestions for schemes for here and now based upon your location, the time and even the weather. Search has been improved with a new search results page showing results from your schemes and other users on one page. You can also search for schemes to do while home vs nearby while you're out and about.

Additionally, we get a new profile page and a whole heap of bug fixes. Whether or not Schemer will stick around, only time will tell. But, you have to love Google for trying out new things. If you fancy trying it out for yourselves, click on past the break for the Google Play Store download links and QR Code.

Report: Microsoft revealing Xbox 'Woodstock' music service at E3

We are stardust. We are golden. And we've got to get ourselves back to the Xbox. According to some anonymous-type sources over at The Verge, Microsoft is set to continue its shift away from Zuneland into the world of Woodstock -- that's reportedly the codename of a new Spotify-like service set to make its debut at this year's E3. According to the reports, the tiny yellow bird of a service will work across platforms (think Windows 8, iOS, Android and, of course, the Xbox, amongst others), thanks, at least in part, to browser-based functionality. The service is said to be set to launch later in the year, around the same as some key MS operating systems.

Harvard tired of overpaying for research, tells faculty to open up

Image

The grand dame of Ivy League schools is taking action against one of higher learning's pet peeves: the exorbitant price of research journals. Even though the e-reader revolution may have already touched other schoolbooks, so far academic subscription prices -- with some journals as high as $40,000 -- are becoming unsustainable, according to Harvard. To that end, it's taking the lead and pushing its own faculty toward open access publishing, and encouraging them to quit boards of journals that aren't. That could in turn prod other schools to take the same steps, and allow Harvard to focus on more, ahem, interesting pursuits.

6 Tips For SLumber Party Success ? ? Maryland Family Magazine ...

Erin O'Reilly, (from left), Haley Forman, 10, Rosie Clemens, 10, and Kendall Broughton, 10, play the Xbox game "Just Dance" at the Forman home. Photo by Sarah Pastrana

Julie Forman has never discouraged her daughters from throwing, or attending, slumber parties because she remembers clearly how much she enjoyed them as a child.

?Growing up I loved sleepovers because you got to go to someone else?s house, be with all your friends and have fun until late at night,? the mother of two from Elkridge recalls. ?I did it and know how much fun it can be, and I want my daughters to have those memories, too.?

On a child?s social calendar, sleepovers rank right up there with trick-or-treating and birthday parties. But what can be 15 hours of fun for a child can translate into 20 hours of anxiety for a parent trying to plan an entertaining party with no drama.

?There?s no such thing as throwing a slumber party together,? Forman advises. ?You have to plan ? who?s going to come, what activities the kids can do, what kinds of food to serve. It doesn?t have to be anything expensive or complicated, but if you don?t plan ahead you?re going to end up calling moms in the middle of the night because someone is scared or bored or feeling excluded.?

Forman?s daughters are 10 and 12, and she?s survived many sleepovers.

?If it?s your first time hosting, the best piece of advice I can give is keep it small,? she advises. ?Crowd control is a lot easier to manager when you only have three or four guests.?

Here are six basic guidelines to follow that can help alleviate stress and ensure a memorable party for all involved:

1. Pre-Party

There are simple steps you can take ahead of time to make things go smoothly when the first guest arrives. Make sure your invitations have a definite start and end time, what each child should bring (sleeping bag) and what meals will be served. When a parent RSVPs, get a contact number for them in the event a late-night phone call is warranted. Designate a specific area of the house where the kids will be by rearranging furniture to maximize the space and removing anything breakable. Finally, make sure all parental controls are activated for your television and computer.

2. Finger Foods

No matter what age your guests are, expect them to eat twice what you?d expect. Make it easy on yourself by buying finger foods like chips, grapes, cookies, cheese and crackers and maybe a small bowl of candy. Juice boxes and water bottles might cost a little more, but they cut down considerably on spills that need to be cleaned up. Keep serving bowls small so you have to go in periodically and refill them. It?s a good excuse for popping in and checking out what is going on without looking like you are snooping. For older kids, late-night pizza is always a big hit, particularly after the 10 p.m. ?power surge? (See? No. 3 ?Get physical?)

3. Get Physical

For some reason that has yet to be explained, kids at a sleepover seem to have a burst of energy around 10 p.m. Everything can be running smoothly, and all of a sudden you have kids jumping on the couch, wrestling on the floor or turning cartwheels down your hallway. Constructively channel this burst into a physical activity like a scavenger hunt in your house or yard, a brisk walk through the neighborhood (let?s see who can run backwards fastest to the corner), or pull out the game console for ?Just Dance? or ?Dance, Dance Revolution.? If all else fails, let them loose in the yard for a game of flashlight tag before the neighbors go to sleep.

4. A Dull Roar

Prepare yourself for a lot of noise. You know how high the volume gets pushed when one or two friends come over. Multiply that by how many guests you expect and don?t be shocked when, in spite of your firmest reminders to ?keep it down,? your partygoers squeal, laugh, vie for the spotlight or shriek out of sheer excitement. Remember that they are kids. While every parent will have a different level of tolerance, if you are expecting a quiet evening, you are setting yourself up for a night of frustration.

5. Wind Down

Rent several appropriate movies for the end of the evening when you want the party to transition to a slower pace. Usually at least one or two guests, if not most, will fall asleep during a late movie. They are also good in the morning once everything has been cleaned up and guests are waiting for parents to pick them up. It can be fun to schedule a sleepover on or near the DVD release of a popular movie. Check out http://www.movieweb.com/movies/2012/family?s=date for dates in 2012.

6. Breakfast

You might be tempted to whip up a hot, hearty breakfast for your guests, but keep it simple with a self-serve meal. Some kids will eat like birds; others might still be stuffed from goodies the night before. Instead of heaping their plates with foods that might not appeal at the moment, set out an easy buffet where they can help themselves to as little or as much as they want. A bowl of fruit salad, cereal bars and doughnuts and bagels should cover all the bases. Water, juice and milk will wash it all down.

IS YOUR CHILD READY FOR A SLEEPOVER?

Some children never think twice about sleeping away from home. Others aren?t ready until middle school. Here are some clues that might help you determine if your child is ready to be away from home until tomorrow.

Might Not Be Ready

1. Has trouble saying goodbye to you. When someplace new, wants you to stay until he or she feels comfortable.

2. Can?t sleep through the night without calling for a parent or visiting their bedroom.

3. Has trouble solving problems without an adult?s help.

4. Is afraid of the dark.

5. Routinely wets the bed.

Note: Often numbers four and five can be accommodated but talk to the host parent first and have a plan in place like a nightlight or an extra set of pajamas.

Ready

1. Has slept over previously with family members.

2. Is extremely excited about the sleepover and shows no hesitation.

3. Talks about the sleepover without expressing fear or asking too many ?what if? questions.

4. Sleeps well and through the night at home.

5. Feels comfortable trying to solve own problems.

TiVo quietly rebrands Premiere XL, Elite DVRs as XL2 and XL4 under cover of darkness

Image

TiVo's rebranding its Premiere line of DVRs in order to eliminate customer confusion in the lineup. The range will now comprise of the Premiere, while the Premiere XL is unsurprisingly renamed Premiere XL2, while the quad-tuner Premiere Elite is now called the Premiere XL4. The first two are suitable for over-the-air programming, while the latter is limited to those of you with cable or FiOS subscriptions. New livery and branding should arrive in stores soon, although TiVo's website is yet to reflect the changes.
