Interview: What's Up With Comic Book Artist Tony Moore? | Thrash Lab

Tony Moore is an American comic book artist (and cosmic cowboy), whose work consists mainly of genre pieces, most notably in horror and science fiction, with titles such as Fear Agent, The Exterminators, and The Walking Dead. Tony?s illustrations don?t just speak to comic collectors, but he is certainly an icon in that space. His work as an illustrator represents the art of great storytelling and character development. In this awesome interview we scored, Tony shares his horror movie recommendations, cool shit to put on our radar and he offers a lot of aha moments. Read on ?

?Describe your style as an artist and describe your ?job? (for dummies that don?t know, or for us who just want more detail): Hmmmm. Gruesome? Funny? I grew up reading MAD Magazine and old horror comics, so in my mind, horror and humor together are like peanut butter and jelly. I?m a reference hound and a detail obsessive, but i also think expressive cartooning in a must in visual storytelling. As for my job, I wake up every day and fill myself to the gills with caffeine and sit in my pajamas, drawing robots and monsters and the rugged men in tights who punch them. I mostly make my nut in comics, but I?ve done poster work for movie companies and album covers and stuff, too. When it comes to comics, it?s a lot of time in isolated deep concentration, trying to visualize every scene from multiple angles, and move though them and frame each scene in an engaging way that captures the mood of the thing, and then portray the events in a relatable way using body language and facial expressions. Basically, if a comic book were a movie in production, I?m everybody on the set except for the guy who wrote it. Design, lighting, cinematography, direction, acting? you name it, I have to put it on the page.

Were you the kid in school growing up that doodled in his notebook all class instead of taking notes? If so, what class actually kept your attention? What was your go-to thing to illustrate in your notebooks? I drew all the time in school, but it wasn?t that I wasn?t paying attention, it was more that i had to keep my brain occupied or it shut down. If I was just sitting there letting information wash over me, even if I was trying to take notes, if it wasn?t a creative kind of subject, then it was all just water off a duck?s back. But if I was drawing, I could usually take minimal notes and remember everything the teacher told me. I had a chemistry class first thing in the morning in high school, and my teacher noted to my mom that if i wasn?t drawing, then I clearly just wasn?t awake. The only classes I took that didn?t engage me were my math classes. I was in the Advanced Placement programs of most of the subjects I took, and got good grades in everything despite being a terrible student. I just kind of hated (and continue to kind of hate) doing math. I was a really avid role-playing game nerd, so I loved Dungeons & Dragons, Cyberpunk 2020, and all the White Wolf games like Vampire: The Masquerade. So, I loved drawing elves and orcs and vampires and monsters, and all the crap that pays my bills now, only slathered in teen angst.

At what point in your life did you become confident or receive a compliment that gave you the reassurance you were on the right path creatively? In preschool, I had a lady offer to trade me a painting i had done for a wooden toy tow-truck. I don?t even remember what the painting was of, but clearly it was awesome. A little later, I had my first solo art show, still when i was in preschool, and a guy from the local paper came out and interviewed me about it. I thought I was King Shit of Cool Town, and was sold on the artist?s life for the rest of my days.

Do you have any staple trademarks a viewer could find in all your work? Rugged men with big chins and stubble, and people who get hit in the head and their hands curl into weird spasm poses. My grandfather was a tough as nails old son of a bitch with a wry sense of humor and a chin like a goddamn cinder block. In my head, all heroes basically start with my grandfather as the basic template, and then I mix and match the details. The other thing, with the hands, I stole from Don Martin, because I always thought his work in MAD was hilarious, and you?d be surprised at how common head trauma is in comics and how often I get to apply it.

For us non-comic illustrators, and us non-comic writers can you explain the process of how it works collaborating with a writer? How much does the illustration influence the creative story? How much freedom do you have? Basically, I get what looks like a movie script, and then I set out to make that into a series of images that tell that story. Different writers have different styles, and different projects require different relationships with the writers. I?ve been fortunate enough to largely avoid assembly line-like jobs where I?m just another cog in the machine. I mostly get to work with my friends, who welcome the creative collaboration. We tend to talk on the phone a bit and cook up some action scenes or cool visual set-pieces to pepper into the stuff they?ve got going, and every once in a while, I might have some missing piece that helps pull the events together story wise. Once the script comes, I?ve generally got whatever freedom I want, but I generally feel like that at that stage my job is to effectively tell the story at hand. If the proposed pacing or panel layout isn?t as affective as I think it could be, I?ll rejigger it a bit to make sure the events that need to happen are there and it carries the appropriate mood. That?s the job. Tell the story. Pretty pictures are nice, but if you can?t tell what?s going on, then I?ve screwed it up. And then lastly, the writers will often give it a last pass, fine-tuning the dialogue to work as well as possible with the art I?ve given back to them.

Is there a particular writer that you felt screamed your style and complimented your visions most? Rick Remender and I have been partnered up for several years now, and we get along like a house on fire. And I think when we get to spit-balling ideas and starting to cook up some stuff, we make some really fun stuff. I don?t wanna toot our collective horn, but you dragged it out of me. Magic. Okay? What we make is magic. Seriously, though, we?re on the same creative wavelength and we?ve been afforded a lot of opportunities to bring some crazy shit to the table, and I?m super proud of all of it. He?s an artist too, and we speak the same language, creatively speaking, like some kind of creepy art twin hive mind.

What comic book character that you have illustrated (or that someone else has drawn) do you feel best represents you? Heath Huston is the protagonist of Fear Agent, which I co-created with Rick Remender. I put a lot of myself into him, and i imagine him physically as a tough-guy idealized version of myself, if I wasn?t a sedentary, soft tub of guts with great hair. He really is the biological lovechild of myself and Rick. I think in some weird sad way, he?s a real portrait of the both of us, for better and worse.

What is your spirit animal? The dung beetle. Nature?s Sisyphus.

With Halloween on the mind, do you have any special plans? Traditions? Favorite horror films? We feel like it might be your favorite holiday, so do tell? I wish. I?m a dad and under deadline, so no parties for me. I used to love to go all out. Big parties, and spend a day or two building a ridiculous costume. I live out in the sticks now, so I don?t even have kids wander by for Trick Or Treat. That said, though, my kid is two and a half years old now, and she?s getting big on the idea of dressing up as stuff, as well as getting a metric ton of candy, so hopefully i can ignite something there and live vicariously through her and a mutual love of the holiday. That said, I?ll try to soak up all the greats, especially the stuff from the 70s. Last House on the Left, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and of course, Rosemary?s Baby. A horror movie marathon is pretty commonplace in my office, like once every couple of weeks at least. It?s one of my biggest passions, right behind comics. Halloween is my Christmas.

What is overrated culturally right now? What is underrated? Ignorance is overrated. We live in a culture where anti-intellectualism is celebrated and I think it?s really damned sad. Science is criminally underrated. I think the Curiosity Mars rover gave us a tiny little cultural taste of what it felt like when we put men on the moon. But we don?t do that anymore. And while we all can?t be astronauts, I think astronauts are like the superheroes of science, the faces that boys and girls can look up to and idolize, and get kids interested in the big ideas science has to offer. I?ve got a 2 year old daughter and all I want is for her to look at the stars and know that those are other places, not just lights in the sky, and to really try to understand the complex beauty of the universe we live in, not just be another dead-eyed Wal-Mart zombie caught up in the stupid trivialities and pointless melodrama on TV, and frankly, most of most people?s lives. I want her to think big, dream big. I?d much rather her be excited to hear Neil Tyson and Alice Roberts than to have any care for what Snooki and The Situation are about. If I can pull that off, I think I will have been a pretty good dad.

What is something or someone you recommend the people reading this interview have on their radar? Marvel?s MARVEL NOW stuff is going to be hot. They?ve got some really inspired recruiting on the books coming up in that line. My pals Rick Remender and Jason Aaron are doing some of the most exciting stuff I?ve seen in years over there. Also, Rick and I are proud to announce the first of 2 omnibus collections of our baby, Fear Agent, which comes out late this year from Dark Horse Comics. It?s a gargantuan tome of sci-fi space opera/western fantasy, and handsome as all Hell. A really beautiful presentation of some of my favorite work of my career. Beyond that, Jason Aaron and RM Guera?s SCALPED series just wrapped up, and i think it?s one of the best damn things ever printed. I can?t recommend it highly enough.

Lastly, what are you working on now? I?m really excited to talk about this one, finally. I?m working on part of that big MARVEL NOW event that I mentioned before, with Brian Posehn (Mr. Show, The Sarah Silverman Program) and Gerry Duggan (Attack of the Show, Infinite Horizon), on the relaunch of DEADPOOL, who is Marvel?s resident smart-mouthed mercenary, with probable deep mental health issues. It?s not a reboot, but just kind of a fresh reestablishing and jumping on point for folks who might have been interested in checking him out but were dissuaded by the years of backlog. This story involves a necromancer/political zealot who, in an effort to save America from itself, has resurrected all the dead Presidents of America. Of course, they come back evil and twisted, and must be stopped. Since they can?t have The Avengers seen going toe-to-toe with the country?s great icons gone corrupt, SHIELD recruits the one guy who has the skills, lack of scruples, and the plausible deniability to get the job done. It?s really funny, and absolutely brutal. I?ve drawn more viscera in the first few issues of this book than I have possibly in the entire rest of my career combined. Still, it?s considerably more lighthearted than just about everything I?ve done, so the cartooning is a bit more relaxed and a real joy to work on. We?re all having a ridiculous amount of fun on it, and I don?t think any of us thought we?d ever get away with it like we have.

Baldwin, wife relay Sandy ordeal: Closet leak!

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Thomas, residents of Manhattan's East Village neighborhood, rode out Hurricane Sandy in their apartment, and documented the experience on video. How did the couple manage to make it through the storm? Well, not without a few hardships. Such as having to move Thomas' gowns out of her leaking closet and to a drier location.

"We already have a leak. Of course, in my closet. I have to take out all my red carpet dresses, because of the leak," Thomas said as Baldwin took video of said dresses, draped sadly over a bedside in the wake of early-storm dampness.

Thomas then bravely steps out on her balcony, scanning potted plants that have been toppled over ("Maybe that's where my leak is from?" she speculates) before going back inside, where she later becomes a little stir crazy. Which means "It's yoga time," according to Thomas.

By 5:45 AM Tuesday morning, with the power out, the couple are left to watch a movie on their laptop, with what little battery remains. Their film of choice: "Mirage," with Gregory Peck. Why? Ever the director,? Baldwin feed Thomas her line, "So while we're in a blackout, we're watching a movie with a blackout."

By Wednesday, Baldwin's foray into film making seemed to be over. The actor was back to tweeting politically driven things about the election, saying, "I suppose, at this point, the critical mass has been reached re a need 4 action on climate change."

?Obuor? Marks One Year Anniversary As MUSIGA President ...

The current administration of the Musicians Union of Ghana, led by Bice Osei Kuffour clocked one year in office in September.

In celebration of the anniversary, the President and Executives called for a briefing of musicians, media persons, and stakeholders in the creative arts industry, other stakeholders such as the World Bank, KPMG and Midland Savings and Loans and the general public to inform them of activities over the past year.

In the President?s speech, which encompassed and elaborated on key issues and activities of his administration, he expressed his gratitude to all who believed in him enough and voted him to become the president of the Union with a four year mandate and to the team he has been blessed to work with since he became President.

When he assumed office, he implemented the MUSIGA Ajumapa Vision which was meant to rebrand the Union, reposition it in a more positive light and a promise of transparent and accountable governance, create jobs, promote unity and to push for appropriate policies for the Musicians.

The President summarized some of the key activities of the Union over the year and classified them into five main headings which are Union-led activities, ongoing projects, achievements, welfare and challenges.

On the union-led activities, some of the commendable efforts are the launch of membership cards, tolerance campaign towards December 2012 general Elections, research into the contribution of music to the GDP of our economy, launching of www.musiga.org.gh, partnership with Ghana Music Awards, partnership with GIFEC in the supply of computers for the MUSIGA Resource Center and the supply of computers to all Regional offices and the Digital Library Project.

He also mentioned the MUSIGA Head office renovation project, MUSIGA TV, MUSIGA and Midland Ajumapa collateral free loan facility and the Ghana Music Week celebration.

The Union was able to secure a governmental budgetary allocation of Ghc2million to amongst other things undertake research to establish the economic and social contributions of Music to the National economy, create a baseline data to inform future data collection on the sector, produce evidence based data to inform policy making, develop a four year strategic plan to grow the music sector, build the capacities of selected Music and other selected membership based creative sector institutions, establish a welfare Seed fund to cater for the Aged and Needy musicians and to promote Peace, Unity and Tolerance among Ghanaians through series of events and media campaigns.

Another achievement was a donation of Ghc100,000 from Dr Kofi Amoah (Citizen kofi) to MUSIGA and a twinning agreement with the British Musicians Union which will allow either countries to exchange musicians for projects in their countries.

During his Presidency, MUSIGA is now one of the eighteen members of the International Federation of Music Executive Committee and has been admitted into the International Music Council

The issue of welfare of musicians, especially the aged musicians, is still being taken care of. A vehicle has been secured for commercial purposes so as to bring in income for the welfare unit. He also touched on the ?Y?edi Awrehuo? tribute song for the late President Mills.

The Union has faced some challenges over the past year. There is an absence of a collective bargaining certificate, inadequate professional support due to lack of funding to remunerate such professionals and a general weak coordination between the sector Ministries, Departments and Agencies

In conclusion, the President assured of his determination to continue to work assiduously to achieve the very promise he made during his campaign period.

As we approach the 2012 elections, he encouraged musicians to use their talents and skills to promote peace, unity and tolerance before, during and after December 7th.2012.

He extended a hand of invitation to all individuals and organizations to join in the forward march towards the growth of the Music Industry in Ghana.

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Birth control, marriage, and women's ...

By Christina Simmons

Ninety-six years ago, on 16 October 1916, Margaret Sanger opened her first ? illegal ? birth control clinic in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Human efforts to control fertility are at least as old as written history; ancient Greeks and Egyptians used spermicidal and barrier methods. But Sanger?s action began a new phase. In less than two weeks police shut the clinic down, but the incident heightened the visibility of the fledgling birth control movement. Sanger and other radicals like Emma Goldman had been claiming sexual freedom for women. They rejected patriarchal control over women?s sexuality; they thought only love, not convention, should guide sexual relationships and that women had the right to control their pregnancies.

Political battles over birth control in Sanger?s time engaged central feminist questions still at issue in US politics ? namely, whether women may exercise the sexual autonomy customarily allowed to men. Recently, we have seen political struggles over health care regulations that require all employers, even institutions whose religious sponsors oppose it, to provide contraceptive insurance coverage. It is sadly indicative of rightwing desires to control women and sexuality that a panel of male representatives of conservative religious groups testified in Congress last winter about this question. They managed to make the issue about their religious liberty to deny contraceptive coverage to employees rather than about the religious liberty of women employees to choose birth control. Conservatives hoped to maintain, in one of the arenas they still control, the patriarchal ideology that had once forced access to contraception underground.

In Sanger?s time political and religious authorities were outraged by her challenge and labeled birth control as part of a dangerously radical rebellion against marriage and motherhood. Sexually independent women might not marry; they might not center their lives on motherhood; or they might want to leave sexually unsatisfying marriages. As Linda Gordon has argued, however, the decline of the political left, as well as Sanger?s increasing desire to get something practical achieved to help ordinary women, led Sanger and other middle-class supporters of birth control to less inflammatory rationales by the 1920s and 1930s. Their later rhetoric downplayed women?s sexual freedom and argued instead that contraception would support the health of mothers and improve marriage relationships.

Birth control advocates faced what radicals in many times and places have faced: hostile laws and authorities but also the difficulties ordinary people have in acting on new ideas that unsettle social conventions and provoke antagonism. Sanger, for instance, had no luck through the 1930s with a frontal attack on existing law, which would have required members of Congress to stand up against traditional religious authorities (and voters) who still feared birth control was immoral. (Instead, a crucial federal court decision in 1936, United States v. One Package of Japanese Pessaries, opened the way for physicians to prescribe contraceptives.) Ordinary women on the other hand clearly wanted birth control, as attendance at the growing number of clinics in the 1920s and 1930s showed. But publicly proclaiming and openly acting on women?s right to sexual independence through birth control ? especially single women?s ? remained difficult. In an era when women?s employment paid very little and women?s most respected identity centered on wife- and motherhood, most women needed and wanted to marry. It was how they earned their living. To engage publicly in sexual relationships as a single woman was socially and morally risky to one?s marriage chances; those who did so were usually part of radical and bohemian circles.

In these circumstances, justifying birth control as part of motherhood and marriage was a safer ideological strategy, one that Sanger herself tried with her 1926 book, Happiness in Marriage. At the same time, others were also discussing marriage in a new way. Reformer Judge Ben B. Lindsey provided a new term when he published his 1927 book, The Companionate Marriage. Lindsey originally intended the label to mark an early, childless phase of youthful marriage; he argued it would allow couples to make sure they were compatible before launching into parenthood. However, the term can be applied more broadly to what liberal reformers were calling for in the 1920s ? a modern form of marriage that included birth control, assumed smaller families, and was based more fundamentally on sexualized intimacy than Victorian marriage.

The 1873 federal Comstock Law had included contraception in the definition of obscenity, labeling non-reproductive sex as criminal as well as immoral. Rejecting this negative view, 1920s marriage reformers borrowed radical rhetoric condemning sexual repression and rehabilitated non-reproductive sex as healthy and natural. Women?s recent success in gaining the vote in 1920, as well as their agitation for birth control and other causes, brought a feminist tone to the discussions, emphasizing women?s right to sexual pleasure. Yet this recuperation of sex by companionate marriage advocates always led back to marriage. They wanted to sexualize marriage in order to save it. Using birth control to improve marital sex and to space children was one way to do that.

Advice works on how to live out modern marriage, including its sexual aspects, flooded onto the market in the 1930s, following court decisions which allowed the importation and sale of books with serious and scientific, as opposed to prurient, discussions of sex. Books such as British birth controller Marie Stopes?s 1918 Married Love could finally be sold in the United States. Most advice advocated contraception, but only after the 1936 One Package decision could works like Drs. Hannah and Abraham Stone?s A Marriage Manual provide explicit descriptions. Most books recommended Sanger?s method ? the diaphragm with spermicidal jelly ? as most reliable.

The economic crisis of the Great Depression did much to moderate opposition to birth control as desperate couples sought to limit pregnancies, and many women bought over-the-counter, often ineffective, ?feminine hygiene? products covertly marketed as birth control. The Army finally provided condoms to soldiers in World War II. But the definitive US Supreme Court decisions striking down anti-contraceptive laws did not come until 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut (for married couples) and 1972 Eisenstadt v. Baird (for the single). From the opening of Sanger?s clinic until the 1960s, many American women read about birth control in marriage manuals and could most easily obtain it when engaged or married. Only in second-wave feminism did women again claim in widespread public ways that all women, single or married, had the right to birth control.

Christina Simmons teaches history and women?s studies at the University of Windsor, in Windsor, Ontario, and is the author of Making Marriage Modern: Women?s Sexuality from the Progressive Era to World War II.

Google tool tracks Hurricane Sandy and emergency resources

1 day

If you need as much information about Hurricane Sandy as you could possibly get in a single glance, a tool created by Google's Crisis Response Center may be your best bet. Reliable and well-vetted, it?tracks the storm's progress and keeps you apprised of emergency resources and more.

Google's Crisis Map?combines information from the National Hurricane Center, American Red Cross and other trusted sources. It offers?details about the storm's current and forecasted locations, emergency shelter locations, live webcam feeds, public safety alerts, traffic conditions and a wealth of other vital information.?

At first glance the tool may feel a bit overwhelming, but if you scroll through a pane on the right side, you can make sure to select only the information and overlays you want to view. If you are specifically interested in how the storm is affecting the New York City area, there's also a separate map tool focusing on that.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

More than ever, FC Barcelona, known affectionately as Barca, lived up to its motto of being "more than a club" for this wealthy northeastern region where Spain's economic crisis is fueling separatist sentiment. Barca has been seen as a bastion of Catalan identity dating back to the three decades of dictatorship when Catalans could not openly speak, teach or publish in their native Catalan language. Manipulating Carb Intake to Build Muscle and Burn Fat | STACK

Carbs

In a perfect world, it would be easy to?simultaneously build muscle and lose fat, but can we really "have our cake and eat it too?" Depending on our individual goals, we might be asked by a coach to either bulk up or cut back. So where is the middle ground?

Bodybuilders seem to have no problem dropping ten percent of their body fat during the 12- to 16-week period leading up to a competition. Is this an illusion? To a degree, perhaps, but these athletes dial in on every component of fitness, from quantity of food to cardio and weight training, to achieve their goals.

What does this mean for the average person? With smart dieting, it is possible both to build muscle and burn fat. To build muscle, you need to time your carbohydrate intake around workouts; and to burn fat, you need to limit your insulin response during the rest of the day. There are a number of ways to do this,? including limiting carbs to pre- and post-workout meals. (Read?Building a Healthy Low-Carb Diet for Athletes.)

If you don't supply your body with the nutrients needed to fuel your workouts, your cardio and weight training can become catabolic, meaning it breaks down muscle. For example, say you lift weights at 4:00 p.m. Your first two meals of the day would be carb-free; then, an hour or so before your workout, you'd eat a complete meal of protein, fat and carbs. Following the workout, your meal would include more carbs; but any meals thereafter would consist of protein and healthy fats, with no carbs. (Learn about a different variation:?Carb Back-Loading: A Nutrition Hack for Supercharged Performance.)

This isn't an easy system to stick with, but if you're serious about getting fast results, it's worth a shot. Here is what a sample day would look like if you follow my suggestions:

  • Breakfast: omelet with three whole eggs, one cup egg whites and spinach
  • Lunch: extra lean beef, one tbsp. olive oil and serving of vegetables
  • Pre-workout: whey protein powder, oatmeal with one tbsp. almond butter
  • Post-workout: chicken with white rice
  • Dinner: cottage cheese with peanut butter

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake rattles West coast of Canada

Canada earthquake: The earthquake stuck just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday, creating a small tsunami. No major damage or injuries have been reported in Canada. Hawaii still on tsunami watch.

?A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful quake hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

RELATED: Bizzare 2012 earthquake

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska and Hawaii, but later downgraded the warning to an advisory for southern Alaska and British Columbia. Gerard Fryer, a senior geologist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the first waves hitting shore in Hawaii are smaller than expected, but added it could be as long as seven hours before the warning is canceled if waves get bigger.

The weather service also issued an advisory for areas of northern California and southern Oregon.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

"It appears to be settling down," he said. "It does not mean we won't get another small wave coming through."

Texas Legal Expert Says Kountze School District is Out of Line

Jim Walsh is the managing editor of the Texas School Administrators? Legal Digest and co-author of The Educator?s Guide to Texas School Law.

In other words, the guy knows what he?s talking about regarding the Kountze High School controversy where cheerleaders are holding up banners with Bible verses on them. Last we heard, a judge had temporarily allowed them to hoist the banners without punishment. The case will be heard again next June.

What does Walsh think about the case?

? If the banner represents a free speech zone for individual student expression, then I suppose that the student who is chosen for a particular game can express whatever view, on whatever subject he or she chooses. Here are some possibilities:

GO TEAM GO. AND SUPPORT THE SCHOOL BOND ELECTION NEXT WEEK!

GET HIGH WITH THE EAGLES: DECRIMINALIZE MARIJUANA

LET?S WIN TONIGHT: AND LET?S HELP PRESIDENT OBAMA WIN THE ELECTION!

The words expressed on the official Friday night banner are written by cheerleaders acting as representatives of the school district. The football players, also as representatives of the school district, give support to the words by charging onto the field through the banner. It shouldn?t take too long to see that this is not the same as the expression of a single student holding up a sign or painting a scripture verse on his or her face.

When the legal issue was brought to the attention of the superintendent, he did the right thing. He did not ignore the concern, as some would have done, confident that the community would be supportive. He did not take an opinion poll. He did not put it to a vote of the school board ? constitutional issues are not decided by majority vote.

I?ve said this before, but if the banners cited the Koran instead of the Bible, the Kountze community would have put a stop to them a long time ago. They?re letting it slide only because the Bible verses go hand-in-hand with their personal beliefs. The courts haven?t ruled in their favor ? they just haven?t ruled against them yet ? and I?m still confident they?ll follow the law in the summer.

Obuor marks one year in office as MUSIGA president - Ghanamotion ...

4 tax breaks for parents on the chopping block - Personal Finance

Many low-income parents could see their tax bills jump by thousands of dollars next year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Many low-income parents could see their tax bills jump by thousands of dollars next year if nothing is done to stop a series of tax breaks from expiring January 1.

Unless Congress takes action before the end of the year to extend tax cuts that were introduced under the Obama and Bush administrations, four important credits for families ? The Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit and the American Opportunity Credit ? will revert back to previous levels.

If this happens, many families will be worse off by hundreds ? or even thousands ? of dollars, said Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.

?If you have what it takes to qualify for these particular benefits, you will get hit,? said Williams.

Some families will take a hit on several fronts if they qualify for more than one tax break. A low-income couple with three kids, for example, will lose as much as $1,500 from expiring provisions of the Child Tax Credit. If their income is low enough, they could also see a smaller refund from the Earned Income Tax Credit, and benefits from the Child and Dependent Care Credit could be reduced as well.

The upcoming presidential election has left the fate of these tax breaks uncertain. Democrats and Republicans in Congress continue to butt heads about which tax cuts should be extended, and there?s virtually no chance they will agree on a specific plan before the November election, Williams said.

Even if an agreement is reached by the end of the year ? which is far from a sure thing, either ? next year?s tax policy will ultimately depend on who takes over the Oval Office. (Related: Americans face $3,500 fiscal cliff tax hit)

1. Child Tax Credit

The Child Tax Credit allows lower-income parents to claim as much as $1,000 for each child under age 17.

Under George W. Bush?s Tax Relief Reconciliation Act, the maximum value of the credit was doubled to $1,000. Obama?s 2010 Tax Relief Act then extended the credit until the end of this year and made it so families whose income tax is lower than the credit?s value could receive more of the credit in a cash refund once any tax liability is zeroed out. The credit phases out for married couples whose income is $110,000 or for single people with income of $75,000 or more.

Should the Bush and Obama provisions expire, the tax break will drop back down to a maximum of $500 and only working families with three or more children will be eligible to receive cash refunds.

A couple with two children could therefore end up paying an added $1,000 in taxes next year. Since they have fewer than three children, they will no longer be eligible for a cash refund. And if they don?t owe any taxes, they can?t apply the credit either, said Williams.

2. Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit

This credit allows working parents ? or those looking for work ? to report up to $3,000 of child care-related expenses per child, up to a maximum of $6,000 per family. Families can receive up to 35% of their expenses as a credit, with lower-income families receiving the highest percentages.

Prior to Bush?s tax cuts, parents could only report up to $2,400 per child or $4,800 per family, and families received a maximum credit of just 30% of expenses.

Should the tax breaks expire at the end of the year, the credit will revert back to these lower levels. That would mean the biggest credit that parents with two children could receive next year would be $1,440, compared to a $2,100 credit under the current tax code.

3. Earned Income Tax Credit

The government estimates that the Earned Income Tax Credit lifts millions of Americans out of poverty each year by allowing them to hold onto more of their earnings.

The more children you have, the more money you receive. For example, married couples filing jointly who have income below $50,270 and three or more qualifying children can receive up to $5,891 this year. If a married couple doesn?t have any qualifying children but has income below $19,190, the maximum credit drops to $475. (Related: Don?t overlook this $6,000 tax credit)

Since 2001, the income thresholds at which the credit begins phasing out for married couples were raised by about $5,000 by the Bush and Obama tax plans. But at the end of this year, phaseout thresholds for married couples are scheduled to revert back to the lower income levels that apply for single filers.

Obama also raised the maximum credit for families with three or more children from 40% to 45% of a household?s earnings (up to a maximum amount), and that rate is slated to go back to 40% in 2013. This decrease could amount to a loss of more than $600 for families with at least three children who had previously claimed this credit, said Williams.

4. American Opportunity Tax Credit

Introduced as part of Obama?s stimulus plan, the American Opportunity Tax Credit aims to help lower-income families pay for college. It replaced the Hope Credit and allows qualifying families to claim up to $2,500 each year for four years.

Obama made the credit 40% refundable, meaning a family that qualifies for the full $2,500 can receive $1,000 of the credit in cash and the rest must be applied toward their tax liability. That refundable $1,000 is especially important for low-income families, since they often don?t have big enough tax bills to apply a non-refundable credit. Often, the refundable amount is the only portion they receive.

But the American Opportunity Tax Credit is scheduled to disappear at the end of this year and revert back to the Hope Credit. At that point, the maximum credit will drop to $1,800. Also, families will only be able to claim the credit for two years and it will no longer be refundable.

?Because the Hope Credit is not at all refundable, that?s potentially $1,000 dollars out of the pocket of a college student, and when you?re trying to go to college, $1,000 is a lot of money,? said Williams. 4 tax breaks for parents on the chopping block

laser treatment around eyes

No Makeup

By: Rita Morgan

A few weeks ago I posted my first article about a ground breaking product that, if used according to instructions, diminishes fine lines around the eyes.

Since www.notjustthekitchen.com is geared to Baby Boomer women, I volunteered to try the PaloVia laser and report its effects on this site.

* On September 25, I tried my PaloVia Laser for the first time. Read the article, describing how it felt and the results of the treatment.

* Within days I noticed a difference in my eye area. There definitely was slight improvement.

* The next two weeks progressed much slower. I engaged in many outdoor activities and since the red marks around the eyes took longer to disappear, I was concerned that my face was getting too much sun exposure. I wore a hat and sunscreen but you can?t prevent the UV rays completely. So, I used the laser every few days rather than daily as instructed.

* I?m now on a schedule of 3-4 times a week and that seems to keep the redness under control. I understand that my treatment is ?going to take a little longer but feel more comfortable doing it at my own pace.

* Now almost six weeks since I first I tried the PaloVia Laser, many fine lines around my eyes have disappeared. Using the laser has become routine. It?s easy and takes only a couple of minutes to apply the gel and press the appliance against my skin.

* Judging from the results to date, I estimate that another couple of weeks of 3 to 4 times a week usage should complete the treatment. I can then go on ?maintenance? and lessen the frequency to 1 to 2 times a week.

Check back in mid November for my final report.
